Seminar offered unique insight into AIS possibilities

Attendees of the MarineTraffic seminar at Posidonia have come away from the event enthusiastic about the possibilities AIS offers their business following a highly informative session.

In front of a packed room that included representatives from some of the biggest names in the maritime industry, a panel of experts discussed AIS and how to extract value for business intelligence.

The two hour presentation covered a number of topics related to AIS Data, including: understanding the Global AIS Network and combining AIS data with other data-sets, while it also showcased practical case studies.

Among those in attendance was Dimitris Tsapoulis, the Chief Operating Officer of Signal Maritime, a ship management company that is a spin-off from Thenamaris. Signal Maritime aims to bring together shipping best practice with internet-age advanced analytics and management methods, which is why Mr. Tsapoulis was keen to attend the MarineTraffic seminar on AIS.

“We really enjoyed attending MarineTraffic event at Posidonia,” said Mr. Tsapoulis immediately after the seminar.

“There is a sense of anticipation and exhilaration to see how the information revolution unfolds in the case of the shipping industry and AIS has certainly snowballed the current era on. There is hype and there is essence, so the big question is what will professionals in and around shipping find most useful; what will transform their working life and productivity enough to change old habits,” Mr. Tsapoulis added.

Evangelos Iliou, Operations Manager of the Athens-based Roswell Tankers, said the seminar was highly informative.

“It was a very good and comprehensive presentation and demonstrated the many possible uses of MarineTraffic data,” said Mr. Iliou.

Also in attendance was Philipos Sfiris, Group Market Intelligence Specialist at Hempell, who was encouraged by the content of the presentations.

“I liked it because it was not about the data but what you can do with the data. Some of the applications discussed, especially voyage forecasts and dry-docking activity in repair yards, can add value to our work as they help us understand better the market situation and how our customers operate, said Mr. Sfiris.

The seminar was also attended by various energy companies, including Lina Molfetas, Bunker Trader at KPI Birdge Oil.

“The seminar featured lots of good information and had a very busy feel. There was plenty of opportunities to ask questions and overall it covered many different areas of AIS,” Ms. Molfetas said.
