Roches Point

Description : Light originally established on Roche's Point on 4th June 1817. Orignal tower was replaced by current tower in 1835. The current optic (second order fixed drum Frensel lens) was installed in 1876. A fog bell was established in 1864. This was replaced by a Siren fog signal on 1st December 1898. On 1st February 1949 a Diaphone fog signal was established with 1 blast every 30 seconds. The lighthouse was automated in April 1995 and an electric fog signal (ELG 300-04) replaced the diaphone with the same character. The Commissioners of Irish Lights discontinued the fog signal on 11th January 2011 despite much opposition. The white sector of the light has a range of 20 nautical miles and the red has a range of 16 nautical miles.
