The University of the Aegean, the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering, Syros 84100, Greece, tel. +30 22810 97100, email: marinetraffic@aegean.gr (referred hereinafter as the ‘Provider’) designs, implements and hosts the service MarineTraffic (referred hereinafter as the ‘Service’). The Service provides information about the current geographical positions of ships, as well as other related information, whenever available, such as the ships’ characteristics, their destination, the estimated time of arrival, photographs, port traffic statistics, etc.
The Service is developed within the scope of the research activities of the University and it is provided free of charge, through publicly accessible web pages.
The provided information on vessels position and identity originate directly from the vessels, which transmit this information through public radiofrequencies, according to the ‘Automatic Identification System’ (AIS). The information collected and published may contain errors, due to the intrinsic limitations of radio communications (e.g. limited coverage, interference, attenuation, special weather conditions etc.), due to erroneous configuration of the AIS devices on board, due to negligent data entry by the vessel’s crew, due to erroneous position received by the vessel’s GPS and due to other factors beyond the control of the Provider.
Consequently, the Provider cannot provide any type of guarantee neither is responsible for the correctness, validity, thoroughness and accuracy of that information published, nor for the appropriateness of their usage for other purposes. MarineTraffic, its scientific head, its administrators and the University of the Aegean provide the information presented in this site 'as is' and they do not warrant its completeness or accuracy nor they commit to ensuring that the website remains available or that the material on the website is kept up-to-date. The Provider will not be liable for any direct or indirect loss or damage arising under these terms and conditions or in connection with the information provided by this website and the notifications sent and will not be liable for any loss of profit, contracts, business, goodwill, data, income, revenue or anticipated savings arising under terms and conditions or in connection with this website, whether direct or indirect, and whether arising in tort, contract, or otherwise. The accuracy of the information presented is not guaranteed and may depend on weather conditions, may be affected by changes in vessels itineraries and seaway conditions, by malfunctions of the relevant equipment, by missing data or by other factors that affect Radio-Frequency signal reception.
Vessel positions may be up to one hour old or incomplete. Data is provided for informational reasons only and is not related by any means to the safety of navigation.
The MarineTraffic brand name, logo and system, all the relevant texts, photos and content, constitute an intellectual and industrial property of the scientific head of the project and of the University of the Aegean. All rights in MarineTraffic are reserved by the Provider. No part of MarineTraffic may be copied, reproduced or retransmitted in any material form or by any other means, electronic, mechanical or printed, other than for private purposes, without the prior written permission of the Provider.
